The short answer
Doxy.me’s Free plan costs providers $0 because another subscription should not stand between them and offering telehealth. Premium subscriptions provide additional tools for care and help sustain that free access.
01
Free to use doesn’t mean free to provide
A video appointment still needs technology behind it. Keeping a platform available, maintaining it, and supporting its use takes ongoing work.
The cost of a free telehealth plan is a cost the business carries, even when the provider pays no subscription fee.
We choose to offer that option because providers have different needs and different resources. Someone starting a practice, offering occasional virtual appointments, or working within a limited budget should still have a way to connect with patients online.
Free is one way we put our mission of making telehealth accessible into practice.
02
How can doxy.me afford to offer free telehealth?
Free and Premium are two parts of the same business model.
The Free plan provides a basic telehealth experience. Premium adds capabilities for providers and organizations that need more from their appointments and workflows.
Revenue from Premium subscriptions helps sustain the Free plan alongside those additional capabilities. Providers who upgrade receive more tools for their own practice while helping keep basic telehealth available to others.
The Free plan makes telehealth available without a subscription. Premium helps make that model sustainable.
03
What do you get without a subscription?
The Free plan gives providers a practical way to offer basic one-to-one video appointments:
A Personal Room link to share with patients
The default doxy.me Waiting Room where patients check in
Browser-based appointments without a patient account or app
HIPAA-compliant telehealth, with a BAA available at no charge
Patients open your link, check in, and wait until you start their session.
A Business Associate Agreement (BAA) sets out responsibilities for protecting patient information handled on your behalf and is part of HIPAA compliance. You can generate and download one without purchasing Premium.
04
Why would you choose Premium?
Choose Premium when its additional tools make sense for the care you deliver.
Some appointments involve caregivers, interpreters, paperwork, or activities that help a patient understand and participate. Some practices need shared spaces, patient handoffs, or a more tailored experience.
Feature access depends on permissions, clinic setup, and applicable availability or usage limits.
Premium gives you additional capabilities. Supporting Free access is part of the wider value of that subscription.
05
Do you need to upgrade?
If the Free plan meets your needs, you can use it.
You might offer telehealth occasionally, need a basic option for one-to-one appointments, or be managing the costs of a new practice.
Consider Premium when there is a clear reason to upgrade:
Your appointments needs go beyond a basic video call
You want to customize the patient experience
You want more of your workflow within doxy.me
Or, you need to coordinate a team
Start with the work your practice needs to do. Then choose the plan that supports it.

Frequently asked questions
Is doxy.me’s Free plan a free trial?
No. The Free plan is a separate option for basic telehealth, rather than a trial that requires a Premium subscription afterward. Premium trials are offered to new doxy.me users, free for 30 days.
Does Premium help fund the Free plan?
Yes. Premium subscriptions help sustain free telehealth access while providing additional tools for the subscribing practice.
Do I have to pay for HIPAA-compliant telehealth or a BAA?
Doxy.me supports HIPAA-compliant telehealth on the Free and Premium plan, with a BAA available at no charge. Your practice still needs appropriate safeguards and procedures.
07
Different needs. The same commitment to care.
Free gives providers a way to offer basic telehealth without another subscription. Premium gives practices more ways to deliver care.
Both support the same goal: helping providers connect with the patients who need them.
